You don’t have to be a serious cyclist to enjoy the High Bridge Trail.
In fact, one of the nicest ways to experience it is to simply load your bikes onto the car, drive to Appomattox, and turn a few hours on the trail into a relaxing weekend away.
The High Bridge Trail is one of the area’s best opportunities to get outside and explore Central Virginia at a slower pace. And when you’re finished riding, you don’t have to pack up and head straight home. Stay overnight, enjoy a good breakfast, explore Appomattox, and make a weekend of it.
Bring Your Bikes and Take Your Time
There’s something wonderfully simple about a bike ride on a rail trail. You aren’t worrying about traffic or trying to get somewhere quickly. You can ride for an hour or several. Stop to take pictures. Enjoy the scenery, and turn around whenever you’re ready.
The High Bridge Trail follows a former railroad corridor, making it a particularly approachable option for recreational riders. You don’t have to be training for a race or planning an epic cycling adventure. It’s perfectly suited to a leisurely ride with your spouse, a friend, or the whole family.
And, of course, you don’t have to bike all the way to Appomattox.
We’ve had guests arrive after cycling from Farmville, which is amazing! But there’s another option we think is especially appealing for casual cyclists: drive to the area, bring your bikes with you, and spend part of your getaway exploring the trail.
That way, the bike ride is part of the vacation—not the entire vacation.
Make It a Weekend
One of the advantages of staying in Appomattox is that you can combine your time outdoors with some history and small-town exploring.
Spend part of the day on the trail, then come back into town and slow down. Visit one of the area’s historic sites and browse local shops. Then find somewhere good for dinner, or simply enjoy an evening at the inn.
The next morning, breakfast is waiting for you before you head out for another adventure—or home.
That’s our favorite kind of getaway: enough activity to make you feel like you’ve done something, but enough downtime that you actually feel rested when you leave.

Staying at The Babcock House With Your Bikes
If you stay with us while you’re cycling in the area, we have a designated area in our garage where guests can store their bicycles during their stay.
Bikes are not permitted inside the inn or in guest rooms. We’re happy to provide a place in the garage so you don’t have to leave them outside.
It’s one small way we can make a cycling getaway a little easier.
You Don’t Have to Be a Cyclist
Perhaps that’s the most important thing.
You don’t have to consider yourself a “cyclist” to enjoy the High Bridge Trail. You just need a bike, a few hours, and a desire to see a little more of Virginia at a slower pace.
So load the bikes onto the car, book a room in Appomattox, and come spend a weekend riding, exploring, eating well, and relaxing.
The trail will be here when you’re ready to ride.
Planning Your Visit
The High Bridge Trail stretches through several communities in Southside Virginia, making it easy to build a cycling excursion around your visit to the area.
Before your trip, check current trail conditions, access points, parking information, and any seasonal updates so you can plan the ride that works best for you.
And when you’re ready for a place to stay after your ride, we’d be delighted to welcome you to The Babcock House.
