You’ve heard natural health experts talk about a detox, but have you ever heard of a digital detox? A digital detox means shutting off your electronic devices for a period of time. That’s right — no peeking at social media, no checking texts, no watching YouTube videos. It’s a step back in time to a slower, more relaxed pace of life, and perfect for your stay at the Babcock House Bed and Breakfast.
Our inn was built in 1884, a time when there were no automobiles or planes. The fastest way to travel (if you were lucky enough) was the railroad. Most people traveled by foot, horseback, or carriage, going no more than 20 or so miles beyond their homes in a given time. Entertainment consisted of playing musical instruments, listening to concerts, reading books, watching live stage plays, and enjoying time with family and friends. There was no television, no radio, and no internet. The loudest noises were the steam trains chugging into the depot at Appomattox and the ring of the blacksmith’s anvil on the forge.
Today, Appomattox retains much of this small town peace and quiet, and the Babcock House is an ideal place for a relaxing getaway. You can take your relaxation one step further by embarking on a digital detox during the length of your stay. And while you may not want to take a step back to 1884 entirely, shutting down your cellphone and laptop is definitely a step in the right direction to winding down and logging off. Here’s how to enjoy your own digital detox and experience the many benefits to mind, body, and spirit that a digital detox offers.
What Is a Digital Detox?
A digital detox refers to a period during which you refrain from using electronic devices, such as smartphones, computers, and tablets, to reduce stress and improve mental well-being. The goal is to disconnect from the constant influx of information and digital distractions, allowing for more mindful interactions and focus on real-life experiences. Many people choose to engage in a digital detox to reconnect with themselves, improve relationships, and enhance productivity. The duration can vary from a few hours to several days or more.

An ideal digital detox is a weekend getaway at the Babcock House. Arrive on Friday night, shut off the devices, and tuck yourself into one of our comfy guest rooms without the distraction of your cell phone. Enjoy a leisurely gourmet breakfast filled with seasonal produce in our guests-only restaurant. Then spend the day touring local attractions, antiquing, or visiting the nearby historic sites. It’s amazing how refreshing it can be to focus on the present moment without the distraction of computers, tablets, and cellphones.
The Many Benefits of a Digital Detox
We all probably spend more time than we should on our devices. An article published by Harmony Healthcare cites a recent study that shows that Americans spend, on average, over four hours per day on their devices. But are there really negative consequences to staying online all day? And if there are, what are the benefits of a digital detox?
The National Library of Medicine states that there are both physical and mental consequences of too much screen time. People who spend an excessive amount of time on their devices suffer from eye strain, neck and shoulder pain, and back pain. Perhaps even more importantly, there are negative mental consequences. These include elevated levels of depression and anxiety among people who report heavy screen time.
The Journal of Mobile Media and Communication published a digital detox study that offers a fascinating glimpse at the benefits of digital detoxes including stress reduction, improved relationships, and enhanced ability to focus on tasks once the detox is over.
Some digital detox participants also reported less anxiety as well as reduced stress. Other studies indicate that shutting off devices and ending screen time a few hours before bedtime can improve sleep quality.
Digital Detox How-To
Looking for a “digital detox how-to” guide? It’s easy to do a digital detox, especially at the Babcock House Bed and Breakfast where you’ll be tempted by all sorts of fun activities to put down your phone!
First, establish clear boundaries for the detox. Choose the time period for it. Whether it’s a half a day, a day, or a full weekend, you set the pace. Go easy on yourself – if you’re a heavy smartphone user, try a half or full day to get started. It may be difficult at first, but you can gradually lengthen the time for your digital detox as you begin to enjoy the benefits.
Unplugging at Babcock House Bed and Breakfast

One way to make it easy is to get away from your typical routine, which is why vacations and weekends are a great time to engage in a digital detox. Vacations disrupt our automatic patterns and help us focus on the moment. For example, if your morning routine includes making coffee and checking your phone for texts and emails, your stay at our bed and breakfast will interrupt this routine. Step down to the dining room, sit back, and soak in the ambiance while sipping freshly brewed coffee and enjoying a full breakfast.
Peace and Quiet: Rest and Unwind with Us

The peaceful surroundings at the Babcock House make it easy to relax. Appomattox is a quiet, rural small town. Traffic is light. The usual city noises are absent. A rooster crowing may be all you hear early in the morning. All around the town are rolling fields filled with cattle and horses and woods stretching into the distance. Absent are the skyscrapers, congested highways, and typical city chaos that can be so stressful.
At the Babcock House, we also provide every possible comfort. Each of our seven rooms includes an en suite (attached) bathroom. The inn features central air conditioning (a must for Virginia summers!) and heating, but there are also ceiling fans in every room.
In the first floor study, we’ve provided a variety of books and games. You’re welcome to borrow anything during your stay. Invite your fellow guests to play cards or a board game. Or, step outside and enjoy the lawn games.
Explore Nature During Your Digital Detox
A great way to enjoy the benefits of a digital detox is to spend time in nature. Natural surroundings encourage relaxation and mindfulness. Pay attention to the wildflowers blooming at this time of year in Virginia: white Queen Anne’s lace, blue cornflower (chicory), orange butterfly weed. If you’re carrying stress, it melts away before you know it when you’re enjoying nature.
Near the Babcock House are several beautiful parks and walking trails to spend even more time outdoors. These are perfect for meditative walks or strolls. Breathe and drink in the scenery. Take a walk along the High Bridge Trail or the trails at the Appomattox Court House National Historic Site. Take a day trip to Lynchburg and enjoy the many trails and walks available.
Perhaps you’re not inclined to meditative nature walks. You can walk from the Babcock House into the town of Appomattox and enjoy shopping or antiquing. Baine’s Books and Coffee is a great place on Main Street to purchase coffee and pastries or a sandwich and sit and people watch for an hour or so (plus, they have a great selection of books). Less than an hour’s drive west is the city of Lynchburg where you can enjoy a movie, window shopping along the main street, museums and galleries, concerts and more.
